Cincom’s World Tour began last week and I drove up to Seattle to attend the kick-off session. One of the talks was by Georg Heeg in which he credits Digitalk with the first commercial Smalltalk in 1985. Georg does not include GemStone in his history, so I thought I’d provide a brief supplement:

  • March 1982: Servio Logic formed
  • March 1985: OPAL language (Smalltalk) development completed
  • May 1986: First sale
  • October 1986: GemStone demonstrated at first OOPSLA
  • June 1995: Servio renamed GemStone Systems, Inc.
